About GATE

  • Over 400 institutes including the IISc, IITs and NITs require GATE score for admission to their ME, M.Tech and MS Programs.
  • PSUs like IOC and Govt. organizations like BARC etc give preference to the GATE score.
  • GATE is held on every second Sunday of February, every year.
  • The results for GATE are usually announced on 15th of March.
  • GATE score is valid for two years from GATE 2010 onwards.
  • The paper has 65 questions - 30 one marks and 35 two marks questions. An aptitude section comprising of 5 one mark and 5 two mark questions, was introduced in GATE'10.
  • Only GATE qualified students are eligible for stipend of Rs. 8000/- per month.
  • The cut off marks for qualifying GATE (in most streams) was 25 for the general category, 22.5 for OBC and 16.67 for the SC/ST/PH categories.
  • To get direct admission in ME Courses of IISc, the All India Rank (AIR) should be less than 40 in the general Category.
  • Your GATE AIR should be less than 800 to get into IITs and should be less than 1500 to get admission for M.Tech courses in NITs

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination administered and conducted in eight zones across the country by the GATE Committee comprising faculty from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordinating Board - GATE, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India.

Admission to post graduate programmes at engineering and other professional colleges in the country such as IISc Bangalore, IITs, NITs and NIPER are open to those who qualify through GATE. Students who wish take admission in masters courses such as M.Tech, M.E. or M.Pharm in India have to take GATE.

GATE qualified candidates in Engineering disciplines are also eligible for the award of Junior Research Fellowship in CSIR Laboratories. Some government organizations prescribe GATE qualification as a requirement for applying to the post of a Scientist/Engineer.

GATE is conducted in 21 streams. They are Electronics and Communications Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Instrumentation Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Architecture and Planning, Geology and Geophysics, Mathematics, Mining Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Production and Industrial Engineering, Textile Engineering and Fiber Science, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering Sciences and Life Science.

Eligibility for GATE

The following categories of candidates are eligible to appear in GATE

  • Bachelor degree holders in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/Pharmacy (4 years after 10+2) and those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programmes.

  • Master degree holders in any branch of Science/ Mathematics/ Statistics/ Computer Applications or equivalent and those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programmes.

  • Candidates in the second or higher year of the Four-year Integrated Master degree programme (Post-B.Sc.) in Engineering/Technology or in the third or higher year of Five-year Integrated Master degree programme and Dual Degree programme in Engineering/Technology.

  • Candidates with qualifications obtained through examinations conducted by professional societies recognised by UPSC/AICTE (e.g. AMIE) as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech. Those who have completed section A or equivalent of such professional courses are also eligible.
